Basics Of Understanding A Yeast Infection

Yeast is normally present on human skin and is often found in areas of high moisture like the vagina and the mouth. It is a fungus which goes by the scientific name Candida. A vaginal yeast infection is extremely common and most females will suffer from this condition at some stage in their lives.

Candida and a host of other fungi are present all over your body, especially in warm, moist areas. According to the experts, twenty to fifty percent of all women carry yeast in the vagina with no adverse symptoms whatsoever. In other words, this stuff is all over most of us with no ill effect - so something has to happen for this usually benign fungus to start making its presence felt in such an unpleasant way.

That other factor is imbalance. The many micro-organisms that live on our bodies are controlled, especially in the vagina, by a delicate, natural balance. Each type of fungus, bacterium or other micro-organism keeps another (or many others) in check. When one type has its numbers depleted, the micro-organisms it usually keeps in control multiply out of control and throw the system's balance into disorder.

Certain symptoms bring many women to believe they might have this type of infection. The most commonly thought of symptom is discharge. Many women experience having a discharge that is commonly compared to cottage cheese in texture. There does not need to be a lot of discharge to mean the condition exists. The discharge may also be a symptom of something else.

There are also many other diseases, infections and conditions that exhibit the same (or similar) symptoms as VVC. A bacterial infection called bacterial vaginosis is commonly mistaken as a yeast infection by many women. Local irritation from tampons, intercourse, etc. Can also appear to be VVC - as can allergic reactions and chemical irritation from deodorants, powders, soaps, perfumes and other cosmetic and hygiene products.

Anti fungal medication or an oral medicine usually works to treat this. Sometimes you might be required to do a combination of the two all depending on your type of infection. Over the counter medication can be used to treat it just as long as you remember that these symptoms are also caused by other infections. Schedule an appointment to see you Health care provider if over the counter products don't eliminate the issue. If you are not showing these signs there is no reason for you to be treated. It isn't really necessary for your partner to be treated if they aren't showing any signs of it.

Bottom line is, always be wise in your everyday meals and agenda. By doing so, we would be cutting our risk for getting sick by more than half. And to be always healthy is a requirement for being happy in the journey called life. Especially if what you are avoiding is yeast infection.
